Congratulations on your new home! The journey from selecting the perfect design to seeing your dream home come to life is an incredible experience. Now, as you prepare to move into your new space, there are some logistics to keep in mind to ensure a smooth transition.
In this post, we share some tips to help make your move successful and stress-free.
Plan Ahead:
Start the moving process by creating a detailed plan. Be sure to outline tasks, make note of any deadlines, and coordinate with movers, utility companies, and any other service providers you may need to contact, including internet providers, trash service, etc.
Also, get packing supplies now! You’ll need a variety of boxes and plenty of them (Moving.com). Don’t skimp on this; you’ll need more than you think, and it’s better to have them on hand rather than coming up short.
Getting organized now will help make your move more seamless (and hopefully less stressful)!
Declutter (Before You Pack):
Moving is the ideal time to declutter and get rid of the “stuff” you have accumulated over the years. As you go through each room, sort through the items to figure out what you want to keep and what you want to purge. As for the items you’re ready to part with, put them in two piles: donate and trash (Forbes.com, Sep 7, 2023). Once you downsize, your packing will go a lot smoother, and you won’t be adding clutter in your new home.
Label All Boxes:
Labeling your boxes according to which rooms they belong in will be very beneficial once you’re in your new home. Clearly mark all boxes, and if you’re really feeling organized, include a description of its contents. Taking a few seconds to do this upfront will expedite the unpacking process down the road.
Update Personal Information:
Notify all relevant parties about your change of address, including the post office, financial institutions, and any subscription services. Inform your schools, doctors, and other important contacts about your change of address as well.
Don’t forget to update your driver’s license and voter registration as soon as possible once you get settled in (Better Homes & Gardens, June 6, 2023).
Coordinate Utilities and Services:
Coordinate with utility providers to ensure that services are set up and ready for you on move-in day, including electric, water, internet, and trash. Doing this in advance will help make your move a smoother transition for you and the entire family. It will be much more enjoyable, allowing you to focus on getting unpacked and start making fun memories in your new surroundings!
Pack an Essentials Box:
Pack a box with essential items, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, toilet paper, a few dishes and utensils, towels, bedding, and anything you might need that first day or two in your new home (Moving.com, May 19, 2022). If you have little ones, don’t forget to add their necessities as well, including some toys to help keep them occupied (and to provide familiarity). Keep this box separate and label it clearly, such as “Open First,” so you can access it first thing!
Although moving can feel overwhelming, if you take a few proactive steps, you can make this life transition a seamless and positive experience for everyone. Happy moving, and welcome to your new home!
